The story of Korea and Japan is coming up soon
At a young age, going to the U.S. due to my parents' educational policy was a real shock.
"There's a country that's so different from Korea!"
The language barrier, salty food, occasional racial discrimination, and an environment that was truly difficult to adapt to, with bugs so big that I couldn't even imagine in Korea.
But eventually, time solves everything.
I made friends with my strong interest in team sports and my skills in the sports that I was confident in. I was good at soccer and baseball, so I gained the trust of many friends. I especially remember hitting a two-run homer as the third batter when my team advanced to the quarterfinals, contributing to our a come-from-behind victory. Also, when I became an enthusiastic fan of the Atlanta Braves, the popular sports team in the US, I became closer with my friends who shared the same interest.
By the time I finished my study abroad and returned to Korea, I had adapted to the culture, language, and lifestyle of the U.S. so well that I did not want to leave.
Through my experience in the U.S., I gained confidence that I could adapt well and connect with people anywhere in the world.
And from there, I moved on to a new challenge: entering a university in Japan after graduating from high school.
私が幼い頃、両親の教育方針によりアメリカに行った時は、未だにも残っている衝撃があります。
「韓国とは全然違う国があるんだ！」
言葉の壁、しょっぱい食べ物、時には人種差別に直面し、韓国では想像できないほど大きな虫がいる環境で、私にとってアメリカは本当に適応が難しい環境でした。
しかし、結局時間が全てを解決してくれました。
私はチームスポーツに興味を持ち、自信を持っていたスポーツのスキルで友達を作ることができました。私はサッカーや野球が得意だったので、多くの友達から信頼を得ることができました。特に私が所属していたチームがベスト8に進出した時、私が3番打者で選ばれ、2ランホームランを打って逆転勝ちに貢献したことが一番の思い出です。また、アメリカの人気スポーツであり、アトランタの野球チームであるブレーブスの熱狂的なファンになったことで、同じ興味を持つ友達との関係がより深まりました。
留学を終えて韓国に帰国する時、私はアメリカの文化、言語、ライフスタイルに適応して、帰りたくありませんでした。
アメリカでの経験から、私は世界のどこに行っても人々とうまくつながり、適応できる自信を得ました。
そして、そこから新しい挑戦である高校卒業後の日本の大学入学に進んでいきました。
어린 나이에 부모님의 교육 방침에 의해 간 미국은 그야말로 충격이었다.
‘한국과 이렇게 다른 나라가 있다니!’
말은 잘 안 통하고, 음식은 짜고, 때로는 인종차별을 받았다. 심지어한국에선 상상할 수 없던 크기의 아주 큰 벌레까지, 나에게 있어 미국은 적응하기 정말 어려운 환경이었다. 하지만, 결국엔 시간이 해결해주는 법. 나는 내가 자신있던 구기종목의 실력과, 강한 관심사로 친구를 사귀었다. 축구와 야구를 곧 잘해서 많은 친구들의 신뢰을 받았다. 특히 내 팀이 8강에 올라갔을 때 3번타자로 선발된 내가 투런 홈런을 쳐서 역전과 팀 승리에 기여를 했던 것이 코어 기억이다. 또, 미국의 인기 스포츠이자 애틀란타의 야구팀 브레이브스의 열성팬으로 공통의 관심사가 생기자 친구들과의 더욱 관계가 두터워졌다.
유학을 마치고 한국으로 돌아올 때가 되자 난 돌아가기 싫다고 했었을 정도로 짧은 기간동안 그곳의 문화와 언어, 생활에 적응을 해 그들처럼 살아갔다.
미국에서의 경험으로 나는 세계 그 어느 곳을 가더라도 사람들과 잘 어울리며 적응할 수 있다는 자신감이 생겼다.
그리고 그 후 고등학교 졸업 후 일본으로의 대학입학이라는 새로운 도전을 하기까지 이르렀다.
